How should I take care of my Shwood glasses?

All Shwood eyewear is treated with Shwood's secret blend of non-allergenic, organic waxes and oils and sealed with with light shellac finish. This protective coating helps the wood maintain a proper moisture balance needed to prevent drying out and/or cracking while also helping to repel water. It is recommended that you re-apply this coating to protect your glasses from damage anytime they begin to look lighter or feel dryer. Regular application should help protect against most cracks and significantly improve the look and durability of the wood. Recommended coatings include beeswax, lip-balm, butcher block oil, or walnut oil.

For daily care, it is recommended that Shwood eyewear is constantly kept in a safe place. All Shwood eyewear should be treated as "wearable art." Do not store glasses in your pocket, backpack, hanging from your shirt, etc. If you are not wearing them, keep them in a hard case or safe place.

Do Shwood glasses float?

As each pair of Shwood sunglasses is unique and wood density and buoyancy will vary from pair to pair, we cannot guarantee that all Shwood glasses will float.

Are Shwood glasses waterproof?

Through our proprietary finishing techniques, Shwood glasses are water-resistant and will not be affected by sweat or other small amounts of water. Excessive water exposure, including - but not limited to - submersion, may cause glasses to warp.

Will my glasses look exactly like the photo?

Please understand that no two pieces of wood are identical. Therefore, no two pairs of Shwood wooden glasses will be exactly alike. Product photos on this website should be used solely as a guide to what a product will resemble, not as an exact representation. Minute differences should be expected in each product’s construction, as minor deviations are inherent to Shwood’s handcrafted manufacturing process. Fortunately, Shwood’s one-by-one product construction guarantees individual attention to detail and quality assurance in every pair of eyewear to leave the wood shop.

Do you use sustainable materials to make your sunglasses?

Yes! We take great pride in purchasing our wood from authorized and supervised plantations across the globe. Our cellulose acetate is sourced from Italy and China, and is crafted from recycled wood pulp to minimize our ecological footprint.

Do you offer prescription lenses?

Yes we do! We have worked hard to develop versions of our wood eyeglasses that can accept prescription lenses and withstand the abuse of everyday wear.

To shop for prescription eyewear, please click HERE.

Please do not attempt to put prescription lenses in your Shwood frames by yourself, as they may break and we will not be able to offer warranty services on them. We recommend taking your frames to a local optometrist in order to properly fit frames with rx lenses.

What is the difference between regular and polarized lenses?

The standard grey CR-39 lenses are manufactured by Carl Zeiss and offer superior 100% UVA/UVB sun protection. Polarized lenses offer the increased benefit of glare reduction as well as 100% UVA/UVB protection. The difference can be seen in the Polarized lens’ glare reduction created by the sun's reflection off horizontal planes, such as on the hood of your car, the street, or water. While all of Shwood’s lens offerings are top of the line, Polarized will offer the highest level of safety and comfort.

Do you offer custom sizing options?

At this point in time our manufacturing process does not allow for custom orders.

What is the best style for smaller/larger head sizes?

The best way to choose the perfect pair of Shwood sunglasses is by trying on different styles before purchase. We are working extremely hard to build relationships with retailers across the world for our supporters to visit. To find a retailer in your area, please click HERE. If you are unable to find a retailer near you, please review the sizing dimensions diagram shown on each product page.

What are the sizing dimensions of your glasses?

Please review the sizing dimensions diagram found on the product page of your preferred eyeglass model.

Is there a difference between the wood sunglass and wood prescription frames?

There is, indeed, a difference between the two. Our Rx “All-Wood” models feature a split-frame design that enables easy insertion of RX lenses. Wood RX frames also use acetate temple tips to allow for customized frame fit.

Please do not attempt to put prescription lenses in your Shwood frames by yourself, as they may break and we will not be able to offer warranty services on them. We recommend taking your frames to a local optometrist in order to properly fit frames with rx lenses.

What information do I need in order to purchase prescription Shwood eyeglasses?

You will need a valid and non-expired prescription or your doctor’s contact information. You will also need to know your pupillary distance (PD) which is not always noted on prescriptions. The PD is the distance between your pupils measured in millimeters. Your doctor should have that information on file. Your local optical shop should also be able to measure your PD for you for a small fee. You can even measure your PD yourself by following the instructions found while entering your prescription information during checkout.

I'm not sure what my prescription is how to fill out the online form. How can I order?

You have a few different options if you are unsure what your prescription is:

If you are able to locate your prescription, you may take a picture or photocopy of it and send it in along with your order. We can, at that point enter your information into the order form for you.

If you cannot locate your prescription, you can still complete your order and give us the rest of the required information at a later time. This way we can start working on your frame right away.

If you are unable to locate your prescription, you can opt for our “call my doctor” option. We will get in touch with your doctor and retrieve your prescription for you. Please note that this option will take additional time.

What kinds of RX lenses do you offer?

We currently only offer Single Vision lenses (SV).

Most likely, your doctor has recommended a certain type lens and we encourage you to listen to your doctor! When ordering your Shwood eyeglasses you will, however, have the following lens options:

• SV Polycarbonate
• SV High Index
• SV Sun Polycarbonate (Polarized)
• SV Sun High Index (Polarized)

Polycarbonate is very impact resistant and is your least expensive option.

High Index is a material that is thinner and lighter than Polycarbonate. This helps avoid the "Coke-bottle lens" effect with stronger prescriptions. We recommend HI lenses if your sphere value exceeds -4.00 or +2.00 or the combined sphere and cylinder value exceeds -4.00 or +2.00.

In addition, you can add Anti-Reflective (AR) Coating to you lens selection. We strongly encourage choosing our anti-reflective coating if your prescription is stronger than +/- 2.00 in at least one eye.

Is there a limit on prescription strength?

• Sphere: -8.00 to +4.00
• Cylinder (Astigmatism): -2.00 to +2.00
• Axis: 1 to 180
• PD (Pupillary distance): 50-75
• The combined sphere and cylinder powers should not be over -8.00

Do you offer reading glasses?

We do offer all of our Rx frames with reading lenses in the following strengths:

• +1.00
• +1.50
• +2.00
• +2.50
• +3.00

When you click "Add Prescription", you will be presented with the option to select "Reading" lenses.

How do I measure my PD?

"PD" stand for Pupillary Distance and is a required measurement when making eyeglasses. If your prescription does not indicate the PD measurement, you can measure it yourself with a millimeter ruler. Follow these simple steps:

1.) Rest a mm ruler on the bridge of your nose just in front of your eyes. Look straight ahead and line up the 0mm marker with the center or one pupil.

2.) Read the ruler in a mirror, or have someone at the same height as you read it.

3.) The mark that lands in the center of the other eye is your Pupillary Distance.

4.) Repeat these steps 2-3 times to make sure your results are accurate.
